InkstersGive Blog ranks 23rd in top 100 Scottish Blogs

by Brian Inkster 5. February 2010 17:47

This afternoon the top 100 Scottish Blogs were revealed at the Scottish Roundup website.

We were delighted to discover that the Inksters Give Blog came in at a very respectable 23rd.

We had, of course, yesterday discovered that we were 8th in the top 25 general /personal blogs and 5th in the top 25 newcomers blogs of 2009.

Whilst a Scottish based blog we have of course, on the main, been blogging about the Habitat for Humanity Global Village Challenge in Argentina. We are therefore very pleased to have received this recognition in a Scottish Blogging Awards. Perhaps it was the Selkirk Grace that did it!

Thanks again to all those that voted for the Inksters Give Blog and don't forget that donations to Habitat for Humanity can still be made at: www.justgiving.com/argentina2009

InkstersGive Blog is 5th in Top Newcomers of 2009

by Brian Inkster 4. February 2010 17:46

Having this morning proudly announced that the InkstersGive Blog came 8th in the personal or general blog category of the ScotBlogs Awards we were surprised and very happy to learn this afternoon that we had also come 5th in the Top 25 newcomers of 2009 category. The awards have been gradually revealed over the course of the past week at the Scottish Roundup website.

It is very gratifying that our Blog has been so well received in the short time that Nicola and I have been blogging. It gives us encouragement to continue the Blog. When we returned from Argentina I did say it was over but not out. So keep visiting the InkstersGive Blog and we will keep blogging about the work of Habitat for Humanity and the progress being made in 22 de Enero.

The Scots Law Student , Blawg Review, Robert Burns and the Selkirk Grace

by Brian Inkster 27. January 2010 22:48

The Scots Law Student (@scotslawstudent) was host of Blawg Review this week. It was Burns day and so aptly Burns was the theme. And very well executed it was indeed.

Thanks to The Scots Law Student for including mention of the Inksters Give Blog in his review. He blogged:-

Selkirk Grace

One of Burns’ pithiest poems is the Selkirk Grace, dealing with misfortune and inequality (and thankfulness for not being in that situation) in society in four lines.

Some hae meat and canna eat,
    And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

Sadly this remains the case today and with the recent earthquake in Haiti still constantly in the news the role of charity has been brought to the forefront.

Inksters is a Glasgow based firm of solicitors who have made great and innovative use of social networking and internet communications in general. I discovered the ARTL (Automated Registration of Title to Land) system for electronic property conveyancing through the @BrianInkster twitter feed.

Brian Inkster has made it clear that he possesses an active social conscience and he is not long returned from a Habitat for Humanity Global Village Challenge in Argentina. The firm’s Give Blog has been nominated for a Scotblogs Award and I’d encourage others to check that out.

Inksters Give Blog features in various other Blogs

by Brian Inkster 8. January 2010 23:11

We have had various mentions recently in a number of Blogs.

Chris Sherliker of our Corporate Sponsors, Silverman Sherliker, features our blogging in his excellent Blawg Review #243: Fighting Back: A Festive Meditation for Lawyers. Chris says:-

Brian Inkster is another lawyer who is fighting back, in true Churchillian spirit, this time against homelessness in Argentina….and not just by raising a phenomenal amount of money for the Habitat For Humanity cause. He actually carved time out from his busy and successful law practice in Scotland to go to Argentina himself and get building with his own bare hands, complete with hard hat and impressive boots that he broke in by wearing them to the office before he went. You can read the whole story of the fight from the links on yesterday’s Argentina compendium blog-post. To The Noble Inkster (aka ‘Lord of the Dance’), we say …

…keep on dancing, brother!

Wikizine, the online magazine of Wikivorce contained a full feature on our time in Argentina in their latest edition:-

Wikizine brings you an update on it's September report: ‘Scottish Solicitors to Build Homes for Charity’.

The Scottish Solicitor in question, Brian Inkster, and his wife, Nicola Walls, returned from Argentina earlier this month having completed their Global Village Challenge for Habitat for Humanity. Brian now tells Wikizine about the experience...

Michael Scutt kicks of the very first UK Lawyers Blog of Blogs: Its not Blawg Review with great style and wit. He includes our blogging:-

In November Brian and his wife went to Argentina to do something real and helped build houses for families living in poverty, as part of the Habitat for Humanity programme.  He blogged on the work they did in the 22nd de Enero neighbourhood, which is 24kms from the centre of Buenos Aires, but three hours (!) travel. He got involved in serious building work, like building a wall, and more mundane stuff like painting walls. I was inspired by the personal commitment he and his wife made in pursuing a very challenging project. This also included learning Spanish (although Brian is still struggling with English grammar apparently and as a filthy sassenach I daren’t make any further comment) as well as leaving their own comfort zones well and truly behind. Brian is a keen user of Twitter and used it to raise money for the Argentine challenge. Have a read of this post if in any doubt about the usefulness of Twitter.

The first Scottish Roundup of the year: Happy New Year mentions some end of year reviews including Brian Inkster's "fascinating review of his project building homes for those living in poverty in Argentina".

Thanks to all these fellow bloggers for the kind mentions and for raising awareness of the the work Habitat for Humanity is doing in Argentina.

Argentina Global Village Challenge Roundup

by Brian Inkster 20. December 2009 11:30

This blog post will provide a recap of the run up to our Habitat for Humanity Global Village Challenge and our time building in Buenos Aires. It will be a useful reference point for the 70 blog posts that have preceded this one.

This Blog and the inkstersgive.com website were officially launched on 23 September 2009 with thanks to corporate sponsor, Innovation Digital.

There is a link from the InkstersGive site to our JustGiving  page, and it was not long before the donations started rolling in. This included our first US donation from Richard Prickman of Bitcher & Prickman. However, he was not allowed to outdo his Partner, Beatrice Bitcher. There followed more donations from my Twitter followers including generous corporate sponsors: The Trial Warrior, Silverman Sherliker and Valentilaw. The generosity of Twitter followers was overwhelming as seen in Fundraising and the Power of Twitter and #FollowFriday for Just Giving.

We had asked for help to cover our hard hats with logos and were having good success. In addition to those corporate sponsors already mentioned we had Inksters, Page\Park, Harley Haddow and Theatreplan on board. They were to be joined by Barr Brady, Oce and Jeffrey Aitken.

We were getting plenty of attention in the legal and architectural press, all helping to raise awareness and encourage donations.

In amongst all this we started Spanish classes with a teacher from Argentina at Centro Español Loco. We were to go on to take 5 Spanish lessons in total. Our teacher ended up joining our La Bordona Tango class at Sloans.

I read a Chinese Poem from 700BC. Our T-Shirts were printed and offered for sale. We were all set to head to Argentina.

Nicola and I arrived in Argentina a couple of days ahead of the rest of our Group. This gave us a chance to acclimatise and recover from the jet lag before beginning building work. It also meant we experienced floods in Buenos Aires on our first day there.

When the rest of the Group (13 of us in total) arrived from the UK it was straight into Orientation and learning about the 22 de Enero neighbourhood that we would be working in.

Then building works commenced. By the end of day 4 which consisted of painting, digging holes and moving concrete fence posts I was very tired but equally elated. Our active filled days passed by quickly with a brick wall, yellow paint and a concrete column, not to mention a higher wall, more yellow paint and a bedroom extension.

We were also able to celebrate the work we had done with the community when we attended the inauguration of the room we painted yellow.

On a day where work was rained off we had the opportunity to visit the Recovering Urban Homes Project and learn of the other work Habitat for Humanity was doing within Buenos Aires. On the way Jas met Maradona in La Boca.

On day 8 and on day 9 we were given time off for rest and relaxation. This allowed us to see Buenos Aires and take in some Tango.

Then back to work and Nicola and I worked together one morning on Tito’s wall. Nicola spent most of her time in La Matanza building Tito’s wall and became a very accomplished bricklayer as a result. I moved around more to work on different projects such as building Miguel’s walls, moving earth at Alejandro’s property, moving rubble at Antoñin’s house, and building Germán’s tower. This gave me a good perspective on the different living conditions and family units that exist in 22 de Enero. It had been particularly gratifying to help the poorest of these families who were just starting out to build homes to replace the shacks they were living in.

Our time at La Matanza came to a close and we had to say farewell to 22 de Enero community. The families were truly grateful for the time we had spent with them and the work we had been able to do for them. Beba wrote a thank you note and Alejandro wrote that “if all the world helped like you, all the world would be better”. With tears in our eyes the bus took us out over the dirt track from 22 de Enero and back to Buenos Aires.

Then it was time to say farewell to Hábitat para la Humanidad Argentina and have a “make your world a home” photograph taken.

Back in the UK I blogged that it was “over but not out”. Indeed with Tessa Shepperson making Habitat for Humanity her Charity of the month at Landlord-Law Blog and Armitage Associates becoming our Christmas Corporate Sponsor the fundraising continues. As 2009 comes to a close I will be considering how best we can retain links with our new friends in 22 de Enero and help them in 2010. In the meantime please help them this Christmas by giving at www.justgiving.com/argentina2009.

Landlord-Law Blog's Charity of the Month

by Brian Inkster 7. December 2009 22:41

The Landlord-Law Blog from landlord and tenant solicitor, Tessa Shepperson, has very kindly made Habitat for Humanity their Charity of the Month (December 2009). In her blog post Tessa refers to our trip to Argentina and Inksters' support of the Charity.

Thank you Tessa for your support and for highlighting the work of Habitat for Humanity in this way.

The Trial Warrior : Our Canadian Corporate Sponsor

by Brian Inkster 30. September 2009 22:47

A very generous donation from Antonin I. Pribetic makes "The Trial Warrior Blog" our first Corporate Sponsor from outwith the UK.

Antonin I. Pribetic (aka The Trial Warrior) is a Toronto-based lawyer with Steinberg Morton Hope & Israel LLP specialising in domestic and international commercial litigation and arbitration. He also teaches Advanced Legal Process at the University of Toronto at Mississauga - Rotman School of Management - Diploma in Forensic & Investigative Accounting (DIFA) program.

A few years ago, Antonin picked up a copy of The Art of War - the classic Chinese treatise on military theory and Taoist philosophy - and experienced an epiphany after reading the following quote from Sun Tzu: "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." Since then, Antonin has studied and applied The Art of War to both his professional and personal life. His blog endeavours to lead rather than simply follow; to enlighten, inform and entertain, as well as to learn from its readers, contributors and warriors in all disciplines and walks of life.

Antonin didn't realise until I told him that his donation (the largest single one that we have received to date) gave him the 'fringe benefits' of a listing on inkstersgive.com with his samurai logo appearing on our hard hats and/or t-shirts when we are building in Argentina.

inkstersgive.com and this blog officially launch

by Brian Inkster 23. September 2009 12:40

The content has now been added to www.inkstersgive.com and the website and this blog have officially been launched to the world today.

A news item has been posted at inksters.com: Habitat for Humanity Global Village Challenge 2009

A press release has been issued:-

"Brian Inkster and his wife, Nicola Walls (an Architect with Page \ Park) are going to Argentina in November to assist with the building of homes for families living in poverty. Working for the charity Habitat for Humanity they will be building alongside other volunteers and with ‘stakeholder’ families who will eventually live in the houses.

Brian and Nicola will also be fundraising for Habitat for Humanity. The cost of the trip to Argentina has already been met by Inksters Solicitors. Therefore, every penny that is raised by Brian and Nicola will go straight to Habitat for Humanity to directly assist the build project. Inksters Solicitors have set up a dedicated website and blog to help in the fundraising efforts. The website and blog were very kindly designed and donated by Innovation Digital.

As well as welcoming individual donations of any size Brian and Nicola are seeking minimum donations of £200 from corporate sponsors who will get their company logo printed on the hard hats and/or T-shirts worn during the build project.

Brian Inkster said “everyday, as a property lawyer, I deal with conveyancing transactions helping people in Scotland acquire new homes. Nicola spends her working day designing buildings  to create a positive influence on peoples’ lives. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to secure their own home. We are looking forward to learning some practical skills, forging new friendships and most importantly ‘making a difference’ to the life of an Argentine family in need of a home.”

Brian and Nicola will be using modern communication methods by blogging and tweeting to let everyone know what they are doing in the run up to the Habitat for Humanity Global Village Challenge. They also hope to blog and tweet during the build from Argentina but that will depend very much on their ability to obtain an internet connection and/or mobile phone reception from where they are working. You can follow their journey and sponsor them at www.inkstersgive.com."

Let the blogging and fundraising now commence.
